Waitrose's Good Food Guide 2014 - who's at the top?

Waitrose has unveiled its Good Food Guide for 2014, with Simon Rogan's L'Enclume in Cumbria taking first place.

This represents a change from last year - Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck was previously number one. Both restaurants scored a ten out of ten - the only two in the UK to be given the perfect score.

The guide itself - taken over by Waitrose last year - has existed since 1951. It gives restaurants a score out of ten and then ranks the 50 upper most of these. As such, it is viewed by many in the catering kitchen equipment suppliers and food industries as a strong indicator of the best restaurants currently available.


The top ten restaurants in the 2014 guide, with their cooking scores, are:

2. The Fat Duck, Berkshire (10)

3. Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, Cornwall (9)

4. Restaurant Sat Bains, Nottingham (9)

5. Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, London (9)

6. Pollen Street Social, London (9)

7. Hibiscus, London (8)

8. The Square, London (8)

9. The Ledbury, London (8)

10. Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, Oxfordshire (8)

Although the order may have altered, all of these restaurants were in the top ten for the Good Food Guide 2013. None of the restaurants had their cooking score changed.

L'Enclume: the new number one

This is the second year L'Enclume scored a perfect ten, after receiving it last year when it took second place in the list.

Mr Rogan said: "I'm so proud of my staff and this phenomenal achievement with The Good Food Guide. This is something we have always dreamed about.

"The development of the infrastructure behind the scenes has also been a key factor to our success as we are constantly evolving and improving what we have in place, and will continue to do so."

The chef also received the 'Best New Entry' award for The French, in Manchester's Midland Hotel, which scored an eight out of ten. Mr Rogan said he was delighted, noting that it took L'Enclume "six or seven years" to get the same score - The French achieved it in six months.

He is also about to open a new restaurant, Mr Cooper's House and Garden, which will be his second in the Midland.

Elizabeth Carter, consultant editor on the Good Food Guide, said: "After achieving the top score in last year's Guide, Rogan and his team haven’t missed a beat, despite the pressures of the past year.

"Rogan rightfully takes his place as leader of the pack when it comes to modern British cooking."

The Fat Duck

Whilst it has dropped down to second place, The Fat Duck still scored a perfect ten - the sixth time in a row the restaurant has achieved this rare award.

Since the new scoring system was introduced 15 years ago, The Fat Duck has had the longest run with a perfect score.

As such, it may be second on the list, but there's no fault in the quality offered by the restaurant. Originally opened in 1995, it has gone on to receive perfect scores, currently has three Michelin stars and is known for being run by TV chef Heston Blumenthal.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801632935-ADNFCR
