Yes, commercial washing machines are definitely better than domestic washing machines if you need washers and dryers that can cope with the pace of a busy catering operation. Not only do commercial washing machines have a wider range of features and wash cycles, but they often have a much higher capacity (up to 30kg on some models), and are far more cost-effective.

Commercial washing machines are often significantly faster than domestic models, with normal cycles generally taking only 20-40 minutes when a normal cycle in a domestic washing machine can take up to an hour. This is because the plumbing components in commercial washing machines are much more durable, allowing the machine to fill, heat and drain more quickly and efficiently.

The amount of water a commercial washing machine uses is dependent on a few factors, including wash duration, water temperature, whether there are rinse cycles involved, and more. It is estimated, however, that commercial laundry equipment generally uses two gallons or less of 180°F water per pound of cloth or linens washed.

If you’re concerned about water usage, there are measures you can take to reduce your consumption, like avoiding the high-temperature or time-consuming cycle options unless you really require intensive cleaning.

Everyday maintenance is very important to keep your commercial washing machine or dryer running efficiently long-term. For dryers, this involves regularly clearing the lint trap to prevent fires, as well as cleaning the dryer vent and exhaust vent frequently.

For washing machines, you should:

  • Regularly run hot water cycles through the empty chamber.

  • Run cycles using vinegar for more effective cleaning.

  • Inspect and clean filters, detergent drawers and water inlet filters.

  • Leave the door open after cycles to air out the drum.

  • Wipe down the seal after use to prevent mould and bacteria.

To use your commercial washing machine as effectively as possible, we recommend reading the user manual thoroughly so you’re familiar with all the settings and cycle options. Our Whirlpool washing machines, for instance, have special features like a high efficiency agitator and automatic water level detector which you will want to take advantage of.

We also recommend that you research the best detergents and additives, as well as ways to pre-treat any heavily soiled items so you can get the best clean possible.
