Branded restaurants set for massive growth in next 5 years

Branded restaurants will grow by £5.6 billion in the next five years.

A new report by Allegra Strategies has highlighted how the popularity of chains will squeeze the profits of independent eateries as they compete for customers in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

Some 22,000 consumers and 120 industry leaders were interviewed about their eating habits and expectations for the sector respectively as part of the research.

The sector - which includes fast food operators, pubs and restaurants - is forecast to record turnover of £16.4 billion for 2013, but there is an increasing trend towards people wanting a more informal experience.

This may force restaurants to get in touch with kitchen equipment suppliers as they seek to overhaul their sites to keep pace with the desires of their diners.

When it comes to informal dining, JD Wetherspoon's is leading the way, as it is the biggest player in the branded pub market, which is expected to be worth £7.6 billion in 2013.

Anya Marco, director of insight at Allegra Strategies, labelled eating out as the "new normal" for people in the UK. She stated there has also been an increase in the number of people going out for their breakfast and lunch, as dinner is no longer seen as the only meal worth paying for.

"The slow economic growth is less impactful than feared, though consumers are employing various money saving tactics in order to maintain their eating out habits.

"The pub restaurants channel is the most frequently visited by UK consumers and JD Wetherspoon's is the nation's favourite restaurant brand for the first time. Make no mistake, pub restaurants will become an increasing force to be reckoned with," she added.

One branded restaurant singled out for praise for being able to tap into the casual all-day dining market is Giraffe, which was recently taken over by Tesco. The chain is recognised for being family friendly and, as part of the deal, sites will be opened in the retail giant's stores. ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801605127-ADNFCR
