Pub restaurants outperform rest of market

Managed pub restaurants are outperforming the rest of the eating out market, according to a new report by Horizons.

Pubs now hold a 22 per cent share in the sector, which includes restaurants and quick service food outlets, compared to 18 per cent in 2008. Horizons expects this to grow to 26 per cent by 2016.

There are nearly 17,000 outlets in the managed pub sector, which has become a major client base for commercial catering equipment suppliers. Total food and associated beverage sales reached £4.8 billion in 2012, accounting for 39 per cent of all sales. Leading names in the industry includes JD Wetherspoon, Spirit and Marston's.

The sector has been able to acquire a larger share of food sales by successfully adjusting to consumer demand. For example, breakfast has become an important source of revenue, with sales of nearly £280 million, accounting for six per cent of all managed pub meals.

Midday meals have also demonstrated impressive growth, increasing in value from £855 million in 2006 to almost £1.5 billion last year.

Peter Backman, Horizons’ managing director, commented: "Consumers are choosing to eat in pub restaurants over other types of restaurant and this trend is likely to continue over the next few years. Managed pubs are doing a brilliant job at appealing to today’s consumer by being flexible in their offer and price sensitive.”

He said that in June 2001 a company survey found that pub restaurants accounted for 17 per cent of all meals eaten out. This figure rose to 20 per cent by December and now stands at 22 per cent.

"Managed pubs are certainly getting something right in terms of their food, which is successfully filling the gap left by retreating alcohol sales. With growth at the current rate likely to continue, we expect food to account for 50 per cent of managed pub sales by 2023," Mr Backman stated.

The Horizons director said pubs lead the way in giving "old favourites a new twist" and taking advantage of the latest trends.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801558167-ADNFCR
