Global coffee giant Lavazza has announced plans to roll out its Lavazza Espression cafe concept, following a successful trial of the first site in London's famous luxury store Harrods.

A further establishment is to be launched in Manchester's Trafford Centre, with another planned for the Newbury Parkway shopping destination in Berkshire and more expected to open in 2013, reports Caterer and Hotelkeeper.

The new concept naturally involves high-quality coffee, but the cafes will also be fitted out with kitchen equipment in order to provide hot and cold food in a bid to compete with rival chains such as Starbucks and Costa Coffee.

Catalan chef Ferran Adria, the former head chef of the critically acclaimed El Bulli restaurant, has designed the cafe's menu.

Luca Piccini, managing director of Lavazza UK, said: "Lavazza Espression offers the opportunity to enjoy a unique Italian experience that combines creativity and quality with contemporary design."

The Italian firm has a history dating back to the late 1800s and is best known for its coffee, which is one of the world's most popular blends and used in many cafes and restaurants.

Its new Espression brand has been successful across the globe, with 15 sites opening in China in 2011 along with a flagship site in bustling New Delhi.

Mr Piccini expressed his hope that the UK branch of the brand could become a "landmark for aficionados of authentic Italian coffee, where consumers can find original coffee specialities and a wide range of cold drinks and fine food".

Further sites are expected to open in various retail centres and cities across the country, with cafes planned for Westfield at Derby and London's trendy Clapham district.

This news follows the announcement that British hospitality and leisure firm Whitbread is aiming for a major expansion of its Costa Coffee outlets, creating further competition for Lavazza.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801476812-ADNFCR
