3D kitchen design 'can help showcase restaurant equipment'

Restaurateurs, designers and providers of restaurant equipment could all benefit from utilising new 3D kitchen design technology that makes it easier than ever before to envisage how a professional catering facility will look when it is completed, software specialist Schematic has claimed.

Its patent-pending kitchen and space planning Business Information Modelling (BIM) is a groundbreaking programme that could have serious ramifications across the industry, especially at a time when the majority of businesses are keen to save cash by planning any expansion carefully in advance.

Called AutoScheme, the software uses open standards to ensure it is compatible with other IBM systems - meaning designers can easily export their plans across a number of mediums and increasing ease of use.

However, the real deal-maker is expected to be the programme's 3D capability, which is a first in the world of professional kitchen design.

This will allow users to drag and drop models of actual commercial kitchen equipment and appliances to mock up a kitchen layout in 2D and 3D, both reducing the levels of expertise involved in planning a design and cutting down on the time and cost of developing 3D schematics.

Joseph Smith, managing director of Schematic, suggested the programme will be of great  benefit to space planning specialists and added that its uniqueness lies in its relative simplicity compared to similar software.

"It is a far less expensive software, [using] a fraction of the annual renewable licence fee and more importantly the skill it takes to re-train a computer-aided design operator to BIM proficiency, then also to maintain the cost of such a very rare specialist operator," he added.

"It is our conclusion that food service designers will be eager to adopt such a time-saving system."

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers recently claimed that changing how kitchens are designed could be one way to cut down on wastage levels in the industry.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801530578-ADNFCR
