In-house catering services at universities will be aiming to win the Gold Service Scholarship award.

The push to improve and demonstrate the level of service available at learning centres is being supported by The University Caterers Organisation (TUCO), according to Eat Out Magazine.

This development may be of news to the industry as it shows more businesses are realising the importance of quality dining, which includes the right catering equipment alongside high-grade food and service.

Chair of TUCO Julie Barker said: "Competitions like the Gold Service Scholarship give our members the chance to shine, and to show that university catering is about far more than catering to student needs - something we do with aplomb - but we also excel in the fine dining sector."

The scholarship was founded by leading members of the hospitality sector and is designed to encourage newer generations of skilled professionals, with a main focus on service. It is backed by the likes of Roux Restaurants director Silvano Giraldin, general manager of Gavin at Windows Fred Sirieix, chairman of OB Hotels Will Bauer and deputy master of the Buckingham Palace's household Edward Griffiths.

TUCO aims to build on the success of Emma Bell - from Keele University - at least year's scholarships, where she reached the regional semi-finals competing against fine dining businesses.

The competition is made up of four sections. An initial stage involves online tests and photo analysing tasks, followed by a second stage where candidates perform service duties in regional heats. The third stage is a master class for the day before the finals at The Connaught, Mayfair on February 3rd, will see finalists demonstrate skills during a special lunch attended by judges and invited guests.

After this, the winner will be unveiled at an awards ceremony at Claridges on February 10th. The competition is open to anyone between 22 and 30 years of age working in the restaurant service business - including universities. Applicants have until September 30th to apply.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801641916-ADNFCR
