FSCI pledges £10k for carbon calculator

The Foodservice Consultants Society International (FSCI) has donated £10,000 to a new drive in the catering industry aimed at reducing energy wastage.

Earlier this month, the Carbon Trust unveiled its Cut Cost and Carbon Calculator, which has the potential to save the sector over £250 million by helping businesses to buy better kitchen equipment and encourage energy efficiency.

In order for the software to be further developed, £250,000 has to be raised and the FSCI has become the first body to publicly back the scheme with a financial commitment.

At present, the tool allows catering firms to calculate their energy costs and see how making changes to their menus, catering equipment and staff training procedures will affect energy usage in the long term.

However, plans are in place to make the feature more user friendly, so firms are able to tailor the system to their own personal needs and better identify alterations they can introduce. It represents one of the most exciting developments in the catering industry in recent times.

David Bentley, the outgoing FCSI chairman - who is going to be replaced by Nicola Boyd-Stevenson - said: "We're delighted to be the first association to get behind this fantastic tool and it's great to see an idea which started during my two years term as chairman come to fruition.

"This has the potential to become a crucially useful tool for all sectors of the industry and we urge others to join us and back it."

Dominic Burbridge, associate director for business advice at the Carbon Trust, thinks tackling energy efficiency is a great move for the catering sector, as more so than other industries, it is highly sensitive to changes in costs.

He pointed out how restaurants could be saving up to three pence per meal and so he is calling on businesses to adopt a "proactive approach to enhance [their] economic and environmental sustainability".ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801604127-ADNFCR
