The Compass Group is to work alongside Ben Mckellar to provide catering services for the University of Sussex.

Its education branch Chartwells will join forces with the chef from the Gingerman Restaurant Group, who is know as the 'Ginger Chef', in a ten-year contract that will see them take responsibility for hospitality and conferencing at the institution's campus near Brighton.

The company has already operated a cafe at the university's innovation centre and will receive £43 million for the new deal, which will see it serve 13,000 students and more than 2,000 members of staff from September 1st onwards.

Chartwells managing director Robin Mills stated: "We are delighted to have been selected to deliver services to the University of Sussex. We have great plans to really enhance the dining experience for students and staff; this starts with the menus and we are really excited to be working with Ben McKellar on these."

The Ginger Chef is known for producing uncomplicated and flavoursome food that makes the most of locally-sourced ingredients. He will work with Chartwells to create a varied offering of meals that can cater for all budgets and tastes.

Mr McKellar commented: "I am hugely passionate about creating great food using fresh, local produce and this relationship … is a brilliant opportunity."

The chef added he hopes to introduce aspects of the Brighton food scene, which is highly creative, to the institution.

As part of the contract, Chartwells will invest £1 million into the university's campus facilities in a bid to enhance the dining experience for students and staff. It will also host student forum groups and provide extended opening hours to foster a greater sense of community culture.

Local catering equipment suppliers will be interested in this development, as Chartwells' refurbishment plans may well see it invest in a range of new appliances.

John Duffy, registrar and secretary of University of Sussex, said he is confident the institution has found the right partner in the company, which he described as a world-class organisation.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801622475-ADNFCR
