Brits still heading to high street restaurants

The majority of Britons still enjoy eating out at high street restaurants, a new survey has revealed. 

A study of more than 1,000 individuals by discount website Groupon UK found that 56 per cent of people visit their local high street for a meal at a restaurant or cafe.

Independent venues seem to have benefited from the recent horsemeat scandal with 13 per cent of respondents saying they would choose them over chain sites. 

This is promising news for the hospitality industry, as it shows the sector may be bucking the trend that has seen many high street retailers suffer from competition with e-commerce firms. 

Indeed, several well known names, such as Blockbuster, HMV and Jessops have recently been forced into administration. 

The success of high street restaurants will also have a positive knock-on effect for catering equipment suppliers, who stand to benefit from any new openings or businesses that wish to upgrade their appliances.

However, Groupon's survey also revealed that there is a desire among Britons for high street offerings to be enhanced. Close to nine in ten (87 per cent) claimed they would like to see a better variety of shops, restaurants and services in their area, while 40 per cent said there is "a lot" that needs to be improved. 

Over three-quarters of people want businesses to offer extra discounts and loyalty schemes, while 61 per cent believe customer service should become more personalised. 

Commenting on the findings, Roy Blanga, Groupon UK managing director, said: "It’s heartening to know that British shoppers still have a connection with their local high street and use independent shops and businesses for their everyday needs."

However, he added that retailers must modernise in the areas highlighted by the survey and make sure their services still appeal to customers. 

"Business owners should also be thinking about how to make their offer stand out both on and offline to deliver better value and customer service. This two-pronged approach is vital if our high streets are to flourish," Mr Blanga stated.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801593785-ADNFCR
