A new and improved buffet box packaging solution.

19 January 2023

Fresh Direct continually looks for ways to improve operations, reducing or removing unnecessary packaging from its supply chain.

Following customer feedback, Fresh Direct embarked on a journey to improve their fresh produce packaging, exploring opportunities to develop more environmentally friendly solutions while ensuring the integrity of produce was maintained.

The existing large, lidded packaging will be replaced with smaller un-lidded recyclable buffet boxes. This small change will remove five tonnes of virgin cardboard from the supply chain each week. That’s the equivalent of 1.25 double decker trailers or three 18 tonne vehicles from the road, resulting in a C02e saving of 497kg each year.

Sourced from responsibly managed forests, fully certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), the packaging is also made from 62% recycled card and is fully recyclable.

Customers will start to see their fresh products arriving in the new packaging solution from early January. This follows a live trial which demonstrated the smaller boxes improved efficiency, storage conditions and the presentation of produce, delivering continued product quality and integrity.
