Plans for new restaurant centre in Manchester

Plans to convert an iconic building in central Manchester into a new restaurant hub have been revealed.

Aviva Investors has announced it intends to spend £15 million to turn the Corn Exchange into a home for a number of independent restaurants and other eating-out venues.

Simon Green of the company commented: "We have ambitious plans for this incredible building - plans that are supported by a clear vision.

"The refurbished Corn Exchange will provide an environment where the best regional and independent food outlets can flourish in this incredible building - a gastronomic exchange featuring at least a dozen new restaurants and independent food retail outlets."

A grade II two listed building, the Corn Exchange was formerly known as the Triangle Shopping Centre and Aviva plans to make the most of its Edwardian architecture by creating an open indoor space that will replicate the feel of a European city square.

The structure was first built in 1897 and became a focal point for local traders when it was opened six years later.

Should the project be given planning and listed building consent, it is expected to be complete by the end of 2014. Aviva has appointed Queensbury Real Estate to carry out the transformation.

Commercial catering equipment companies will certainly be following any further developments with interest, as the scheme could generate a significant amount of trade if given the go-ahead.

This is not the only project in the pipeline for Manchester at the moment, as celebrity chef James Martin is planning to open a new venue in the city.

Last month, he revealed James Martin Manchester will be opened at the Manchester235 casino in September.

The chef said the restaurant's menu will focus on modern British food and claimed he is excited to add the venue to the city's dining scene.

Martin will be running the outlet in partnership with Caesars Entertainment and it will take over the site of the Linen restaurant.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801623996-ADNFCR
