The world's largest fish and chip shop is located in Bournemouth.

Harry Ramsden's venue in the Dorset town has recently undergone a £1 million refurbishment, which has seen new kitchen equipment installed among other developments.

Through a combination of a main restaurant, cafe, al fresco seating and an outdoor terrace area overlooking Bournemouth beach, the outlet can now host a total of 417 customers at any one time.

This means it is has easily overtaken Sharpy's restaurant in Wigan - which contains seating for 270 people - as the world's largest fish and chip shop.

Prior to the opening of the refurbished venue its operations manager Chris Walter said the changes were being made as the restaurant was "looking very tired" and it was 15 years since any improvements had been made to the site.

The refurbishment was carried out by CDS - Wilman, with the aim of creating a "classically British" outlet with "worn seaside village tones".

Harry Ramsden's has employed 125 staff to work at the restaurant, including 50 new employees as a result of the expansion.

The company believes the venue will attract around one million customers each year, serving more than 286 tonnes of chips and 90 tonnes of cod. It will also get through approximately 21 tonnes of mushy peas, ten tonnes of tartare sauce and eight tonnes of ketchup each year.

Mr Walter told the Daily Star the company has sent off details of the restaurant to the National Federation of Fish Friers and Guinness World Records in a bid to confirm the venue's status as the world's largest fish and chip shop.

Andrew Crook, treasurer for the National Federation of Fish Friers, told the news provider he thinks it is likely the venue will take the accolade. “It definitely sounds like they could be the new record holder," he stated.

Harry Ramsden's was established in 1928 and is the oldest fish and chips chain in the UK. It currently operates 28 outlets across the country.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801612843-ADNFCR
