Boost for hospitality sector as more Brits 'holiday at home'

More Britons are choosing to go on holiday within the UK, according to new research.

A study by Travelodge found that nearly two-thirds (65 per cent) of people will stay in Britain for their summer holiday this year, which is up from 41 per cent in 2012.

This will be welcome news for UK hotels and restaurants who can expect to see an increased number of customers during the summer.

Travelodge found that the average home-based holiday will cost £399.28 this year, which will boost the tourism industry by around £12 billion and a substantial amount of this will filter through to the hospitality sector.

When it comes to the length of a break, 42 per cent of people are taking a week-long holiday this summer, 15 per cent will be away for a fortnight and a third will divide their vacation over three short breaks, meaning they can visit several different locations.

City breaks have taken over from traditional seaside holidays as the nation's favourite form of UK trip. Nearly a third (31 per cent) of respondents will indulge in this type of vacation, compared to 22 per cent who will visit the coast.

A further 27 per cent have a rural/countryside break planned, while 18 per cent will visit family and 15 per cent will go to a place of historic interest.

The popularity of the city break is reflected in the fact that London and Edinburgh came first and second in Travelodge's list of the most common destinations. Cornwall and the Lake District dropped to fourth and third respectively.

This news will certainly be welcomed by kitchen and catering equipment suppliers, as increased trade for hotels and restaurants means there will be more demand for equipment, be it for new openings or refurbishments.

However, the poor weather - which affected spring restaurant sales - will remain a concern, as 15 per cent of people said they have been waiting for conditions to improve before booking their UK break.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801588573-ADNFCR
