Five new restaurants to open in York

York's restaurant industry is receiving a small boost as five restaurants are looking to set up shop in the city.

Three restaurants, the York Press reports, will be "completely new". One is said to be opening at the location of Budgen's supermarket. A fourth business will become a Bella Italia, to open at Clifton Moor. The fifth will be a south Indian restaurant - Vivia Goa - at the J Baker's site found at Fossgate.

York is going to have a strong need for catering and kitchen equipment as a result of the announcement.

Bella Italia, which has a business in Low Petergate, is looking to open up a second store. Clifton Moor owner USS is looking for to spend £800,000 on the new restaurant.

Planning applications have already been submitted to the local council for the location occupied by Budgen's, with potentially strong interest already lined up.

Walker Nicholas Architects told the York Press there was "considerable interest" in Budgen's, due to its location and size. The company stated the smaller size of Meadowhall's food court means many bigger names couldn't get hold of enough space to open up. It hopes the bigger size will encourage this.

A spokesperson said: "Many of these operators have an all-day trading format, creating a significant employment opportunity for the city. The size and current rent will ensure the property will form the magnet the city needs to bring some of the unsatisfied restaurant requirements to its streets. This is not an opportunity for a new-start business."

Budgen's, however, says it is considering its options and has not made any long-term decisions about the store.

Another development is also being focused on the site of a former Argos. This needs planning permission to change the use to a restaurant - previously approved permission in 2009 has since expired.

Plans have been submitted by Individual Restaurants - owners of The Restaurant Bar & Grill, Bank and Zinc - to convert it into two separate eateries.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801636145-ADNFCR
