Mexican-style casual dining firm Tortilla has announced plans to open new sites outside of London in a bid to expand its UK operation and break into new markets, following the provision of new funding from Santander Corporate Banking.

The group describes itself as the largest fast-casual Mexican restaurant group in the UK and Europe and hopes to penetrate further customer bases utilising the £2.25 million bank financing it has received from Santander.

It has secured three additional sites already, which it will furnish with commercial catering equipment before hiring staff and beginning to trade.

These are in the Crown Estate's 460 Strand site in central London, adjacent to Trafalgar Square, at Bluewater in Kent and in Hammerson's WestQuay Shopping Centre in Southampton.

The latter two operations will be the first that Tortilla has launched outside of the M25, indicating its plans to take its operation national over the coming years as it tries to overtake its rivals in the popular Mexican casual-dining sector.

Brandon Stephens, who founded the restaurant group in 2007, said: "The financing from Santander provides us with the capital necessary to execute our objectives for growth and will allow us to pursue a number of exciting expansion initiatives within the M25 as well as outside of London."

Opening the three new sites will mean Tortilla has 11 locations in the UK, strengthening its position in the market.

The group was recently named by Zagat as the Top Mexican Restaurant in London as well as a Best Buy.

Sarah Fox, head of catering for Hammerson in Southampton, expressed her pleasure at being able to welcome the highly-rated chain to the supermarket's food court.

Mexican dining has been a boom area in the UK over the last decade, with restaurants such as Chiquito and Wahaca all launching as part of this growing trend.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801461436-ADNFCR
