London restaurants enjoy trading boost

The pub and restaurant sector in London enjoyed a major boost over the course of August despite relatively indifferent trading elsewhere in the UK, according to the latest Coffer Peach Business Tracker.

It found that collective like-for-like sales inside the M25 increased by five per cent throughout the month, while they only grew by an average of one per cent elsewhere in the country.

Peter Martin of Peach Factory, which produces the performance barometer, suggested that various factors were at play in the results, which highlight the prospects for growth in the London hospitality industry.

He cited the "bounce back from last year's August riots, brighter weather for much of the month and, of course, the Olympics", as crucial in driving up performance in the English capital.

However, the industry expert revealed that the Olympic Games - often mooted as a potential pick-me-up for British hospitality - had an uneven effect for operators across London.

"While some operators saw their usual trade in London disrupted, as regular customers stayed at home, others have reported buoyant trading," revealed Mr Martin, suggesting that one major variable in trading performances is how close restaurants and pubs were to the actual Olympic action.

Furthermore, intense competition in the capital meant casual dining restaurants only enjoyed a 2.8 per cent expansion compared to last year.

Despite the fact that the Games failed to have a positive effect on the rest of the country, Mr Martin argued that "the major pub and restaurant chains will not be too disappointed" with a reasonable month's trading in fairly difficult economic conditions.

Mark Sheehan, managing director of Coffer Corporate Leisure, also struck a positive note by suggesting the long-term legacy of the Olympic Games in London will far outweigh any short-term boost in visitor numbers.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge singled out the hospitality industry for praise in his speech at the closing ceremony.
