Lavazza prepares UK expansion

Coffee company Lavazza has announced plans for a major UK expansion after opening its first permanent British store at Manchester's Trafford Centre, with the company hoping to compete with established names such as Costa and Starbucks in the coming years.

Lavazza has been popular in Britain for some time thanks to its range of store-bought coffee products, and hopes to build on that brand awareness to encourage people to visit its high-end establishments.

It intends to launch five more of its so-called Lavazza Espression coffee shops in the coming months, with Derby, Leeds, Newbury and two locations in London earmarked for the project.

Assuming this goes to plan, the multinational firm hopes to open 50 stores over the next three years in collaboration with property consultant Cushman & Wakefield. The majority of these are to be based in the Greater London area.

However, this is only the tip of the iceberg, with Cushman & Wakefield revealing that the company has instructed them to search for 40 units that could be fitted with kitchen equipment and coffee machines in the next decade.

It said it planned to secure "prime high footfall locations on high streets, regional shopping centres and tourist destinations".

This would make Lavazza a major player in the UK's already-crowded high street coffee market, which has enjoyed impressive levels of growth recently as Britons flock to cafes offering light dining options as well as a range of hot drinks.

Jeffrey Young, managing director of Allegra Strategies, recently claimed that the unprecedented success of the branded coffee market has "astounded" the majority of analysts.

"As consumers gain more opportunity to consume quality coffee through more outlets, they are making it part of their lifestyle. Britain has become a 'new nation of coffee drinkers,'" he suggested.

With such enthusiasm for the beverage across the UK, Lavazza could well find themselves swamped with customers as they open their new sites.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801531403-ADNFCR
