Restaurants could benefit from staycation trend

An increasing number of Britons are choosing to take their holidays within the UK rather than travelling abroad, a trend that has been dubbed staycations.

This can be only good news for the country's restaurant and catering industry as they can expect to see improved trade, particularly in the summer months, as a result.

Indeed, 2013 has seen a growing number of people opt for a staycation, according to research by hotel comparison website trviago. The company believes the hot weather experienced during July was the primary factor behind this, with more individuals choosing to stay and enjoy the sunshine in the UK.

Trivago found a number of the country's most popular destinations saw an increase in hotel bookings from July 13th onwards. The greatest rise was Woolacombe in Devon, where the number of staycationers was up by 41 per cent. 

Barmouth in Wales saw a 20 per cent increase, as did the traditional seaside resort of Blackpool. Other areas that attracted a significant number of new visitors include Falmouth, Cornwall, Folkestone, Kent and Paignton, Devon.

While domestic bookings have increased, some of the foreign destinations that are often popular with Britons have seen a reduction in hotel bookings. The number of visitors to Spanish resorts Magaluf and Mallorca dropped by 25 per cent and Ayia Napa in Cyprus saw a 19 per cent drop.

This is good news for the UK hospitality industry and is also positive for the commercial catering equipment trade as a result. 

Trivago research is not the only evidence of the growing popularity of staycations, as Travelodge has claimed the phenomenon is now "bigger than ever".

Grant Hearn, the company's chief executive, commented: "The Staycation trend accelerating to record levels and boosting our economy by £12 billion this year is a welcome sign and hopefully this is the start of our 2012 Olympics legacy gain."

According to Travelodge, some 17.3 million Britons will visit the UK's top 20 destinations for a home-based holiday this year, injecting more than £5 billion into local economies.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801620253-ADNFCR
