What has been going on in the catering industry this week? 

New contract for Amadeus 

Catering services firm Amadeus has been awarded a contract with Birmingham Town Hall. It will provide banqueting and conference catering for commercial events at the second city venue and has developed a range of exclusive menus that will only be available at the site.

Amadeus came out on top in a six-way tender process and the firm's managing director Kevin Watson said he is pleased to add another city-centre venue to the company's portfolio.

"We already hold the catering contracts for the NIA and the ICC Birmingham, so to be awarded the contract for another two of the most iconic buildings in the country’s second city, in the space of just a few months, is a huge triumph," he stated.

Nick Loveland, director of operations at Town Hall and Symphony Hall Birmingham, said Amadeus is an ideal partner for the organisation due to its reputation for catering expertise and having a high quality food offering. 

Sustainability stars for Opus

Staying in the second city, two restaurants owned by Opus in Birmingham have been recognised as the most sustainable in the West Midlands. 

Both Opus on Cornwall Street and Cafe Opus at the Ikon Gallery have been awarded three-star ratings by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), Eat Out Magazine reports.

Ann Tonks, Opus director, commented: "We believe passionately in running our restaurants the right way. So to receive recognition that we are running the most sustainable restaurants in Birmingham is a great reward for all of the team who have worked so hard to get us to this point."

Receiving three-star ratings means the venues are ranked as some of the most sustainable in the UK. Sending no waste to landfill, having a good relationship with suppliers and working with the local community, were some of the actions that helped the outlets receive the accolade.

Mark Linehan, SRA managing director, said Opus is catering to the growing number of restaurant diners who want to know where their food comes from and how the business is run. 

Essex shopping centre set for food service revamp

One of Essex's most popular shopping centres has unveiled plans for a £9 million redevelopment of its food court.

Intu Lakeside in West Thurrock will carry out the revamp as part of a wider £180 million extension, BigHospitality reports.

Catering equipment will be installed in the shopping centre, as 13 new food outlets are set to be created alongside existing household names like Burger King, KFC and Pizza Express. The project is due to get underway by the end of August and it is hoped it will see more of the complex's 25 million yearly visitors spend longer within its walls.

Jonathan Ainsley, asset management director at Intu, said the company realises the importance of having a varied catering offering and believes this could increase consumer dwell time by as much as two-thirds.

The new food court will run alongside the shopping centre's boardwalk feature, which contains 12 restaurants and has been described by Mr Ainsley as a great success.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801625900-ADNFCR
