Hospitality and catering apprenticeship rates soar

An increasing number of people are seeking to enter the hospitality and catering industry by undertaking an apprenticeship.

A new report by skills council People 1st, which has launched several initiatives to promote the value of apprenticeships, found that the number of people enrolling on these courses has more than doubled in the last four years. 

More than 35,000 people started an apprenticeship last year, compared to just 14,890 in 2007-08. 

The news was welcomed by People 1st chief executive Brian Wisdom. He stated: "This is important because apprenticeships play a vital role in career pathways, ensuring that new entrants are developing the skills to equip them with a career in the industry."

Completion on the up

It's not just the number of people choosing to do apprenticeships that has increased, the completion rate has also improved dramatically. It has increased by nearly ten per cent in the last four years and virtually three-quarters (74 per cent) of individuals have now successfully complete their training. 

"The industry should be extremely proud of the impressive gains made both in the number of apprenticeships undertaken and the vast improvement in completion rates," Mr Wisdom commented.

"While our industries have continued to improve, completion rates across the rest of the economy have remained static."

The results are particularly impressive as the catering and hospitality industry generally has something of a high staff turnover.

Good news for employers

This apprenticeship boost is good news for employers who stand to benefit from an extended talent pool.

Mr Wisdom said People 1st has received a large amount of positive feedback from businesses saying that learners are now getting the skills they are looking for. He revealed the organisation has been working alongside employers to highlight skills shortages and focus apprenticeships towards these areas. 

This is likely to have a positive knock-on effect for kitchen equipment providers, who will naturally benefit from the successes of the catering and hospitality industry. 

People 1st has also recently worked with the Hospitality Guild on its Act NOW! project, which aims to promote the value of apprenticeships to both job seekers and businesses. 

Albert Roux gets involved

It's not just People 1st that is trying to get more people involved with the hospitality sector, as celebrity chef Albert Roux has contributed to the opening of a kitchen at a school in Inverness, which will give pupils the chance to learn catering skills.

The Charleston Academy has received a £40,000 grant towards the cost of creating the £200,000 semi-industrial kitchen and the school aims for it to be operational within the next two years, the BBC reports. 

Chris O'Neill, the academy's rector, said Michelin star-winning Roux has worked with the school for a number of years. 

He claimed the new kitchen will "exemplify equal opportunities by bringing together different age groups and genders".

Mr O'Neill added that an increasing number of boys are aiming to working in the hospitality sector and the facility will give them a chance to embark on this career path.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801595842-ADNFCR
