Giraffe and TRG combine for new Heathrow restaurant

Giraffe and The Restaurant Group (TRG) will work together to create a new eatery at Heathrow Airport.

They are to join forces to launcg a venue named Wondertree, which will be situated in the site's new Terminal 2 building. It is due to open in June 2014 and will be the largest restaurant in the facility, with cover for 210 people.

Nick Ayerst, TRG Concessions managing director, commented: "Wondertree embraces the new generation of eating and drinking and promises to provide a unique experience for Heathrow passengers."

He said the company had chosen to work with Giraffe on the project having already had a successful partnership with them in the airport.

New catering equipment is set to be installed at the site, which covers 5,000 sq ft and provides a view of the airfield. It will also contain a self-service cafe and casual dining area.

Heathrow’s retail director Muriel-Zingraff Shariff said Wondertree is a welcome addition to the terminal and should prove particularly attractive to families.

"The dining experience is so important to our passengers and our challenge together with our restaurant partners is to deliver a menu that is designed for busy travellers, caters to an international audience and enhances their journey," she added.

Russel Joffe, Giraffe managing director, said the venue aims to provide a new approach to airport dining. Its menu will be cooked to order and include flatbread pizzas, stacked sandwiches, freshly baked bread and global foods like los cabos chicken tacos among other dishes.

Modern technology is also set to be utilised, with contactless payment and tablet menus to be available. Heathrow Airport has been working on the new Terminal 2 building, named the Queen's Terminal, since 2010.

This is not the only major undertaking for Giraffe in 2013, as in March the restaurant chain was acquired by Tesco in a deal worth nearly £50 million. The transaction will see Giraffe venues installed at larger Tesco stores throughout the UK, as the supermarket chain looks to regain its fallen share of the food retail market.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801609241-ADNFCR
