Domino's makes strong start to 2013

Domino's has posted impressive sales figures for the first quarter of 2013.

The pizza delivery company saw its system sales grow by 12.3 per cent to £164.1 million compared to the same period last year.

Despite the disruptive impact of snow, like-for-like sales in the chain's 670 UK mature stores increased by 6.6 per cent. This was partly due to the launch of new products such as the Domino’s hot dog stuffed crust pizza. European like-for-like sales were resilient and rose by 8.1 per cent.

Ecommerce remains an increasingly important area for the business and nearly two-thirds of all delivered sales in the UK were ordered online, compared to just under half in 2012.

Sales taken through all online platforms were up by 38.4 per cent to £82.4 million. A quarter of these were made on mobile devices, which is an increase of nine per cent on the previous year.

During the first three months of 2013, Domino's installed catering equipment at seven new stores, five of which were in the UK and two in Germany. This is just the beginning of a large-scale expansion, with the company planning to open 60 new UK outlets and 18 in Germany by the end of the year.

The chain is also making progress in Switzerland, with its stores showing good growth in the opening months of 2013. Like-for-like sales in its mature outlets were up by 9.3 per cent for the period.

Lance Batchelor, Domino's chief executive, commented: "New product launches, a relentless focus on service, industry leading digital and online technology, an ever growing marketing budget and a healthy pipeline of new sites are just some of the ways we continue to drive this terrific business forward."
