We go over some of the more interesting or unusual news in the pub and restaurant sectors that may be of importance to the catering supplies industry this week.

Camra research shows the local importance of pubs

The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) has published findings showing how important the pub can be in local communities.

Its study shows that pubs are important for special occasions in people's lives. Three-quarters of respondents celebrated a family member or friend's birthday in such an establishment. This was the most prolific event, followed by wakes (48 per cent), having a date (48 per cent), wedding anniversaries (42 per cent), celebrating a new birth (36 per cent) and meeting their current partner (20 per cent).  

Camra's research marks the beginning of its third national campaign this year - Pubs in our Lives - running throughout October, which aims to demonstrate the importance of these traditional eating and drinking locations for special events and increase their use.

The organization's chief executive Mike Benner said: "With more local facilities like community halls closing around Britain, the British pub is for many the only facility the community can use. The new research does throw open the question - Where would we be celebrating special occasions or meeting our future loved ones without the local pub?"

Harry Ramsden's Chipshop to expand with 100 stores

The fish and chip brand Harry Ramsden's has announced its plans to expand to 100 outlets within five years have been revised forward due to interest.

Rather than traditional restaurants, Harry Ramsden's has announced it will offer "traditional locals" under the brand. These will be high street locations of around 1,000 sq ft in size. This is great news for the catering industry as so many new businesses will all need kitchen equipment for the amounts of food associated with fish and chip operations.

A spokesperson said: "Those electing to take our franchise will be able to provide their customers the authentic Harry Ramsden's experience, freshly preparing our world famous fish and chips and complementary products on site at great value for money prices."

The representative added there are over 10,000 fish and chip shops across the country, selling 225 million portions annually. Harry Ramsden's aims to offer the traditional experience.

Restaurants utilise digital technology

A number of restaurants are bringing modern innovations into their business, including touch-screen and digital services.

The report by BigHospitality looked at a number of eateries that have made such developments. Wahaca's Burrito Mama in London is one example, offering self-server order screens. The company is also building an app to avoid queuing at its fast-casual dining business and recently trialled another app - Flypay - that allowed customers to split, check and pay bills from their mobile phone cutting the payment process down to one minute, compared to the average of ten minutes for the industry.

Other apps are helping restaurants to open takeaway services. Qudini lets people join virtual queues on their phone rather than physically waiting in line. This is done through short message service updates and is being used at both Honest Burgers and Bodean's. Tsuru in London, meanwhile, is making the most of the Zerved app, which enables the ordering and payment of food entirely through a phone so customers only have to collect their order.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801644978-ADNFCR
