Tourism 'crucial to UK growth'

British culture secretary Maria Miller is expected to praise the UK leisure and tourism industry in a keynote speech at the World Travel Market in London today (November 6th), stressing the central role it can play in the country's efforts to grow and recover economically.

A record tourist spend of £598 million in August 2012, marking an increase of nine per cent from 2011, has underlined how successful the British tourist industry can be if given sufficient support, reports Caterer and Hotelkeeper.

Ms Miller's positive attitude will come as a boost to restaurant owners hoping to buy cheap catering equipment and expand their operation, as increased numbers of tourist visiting the UK will be good news for their trade levels.

"In Britain, this government recognises that tourism is a cornerstone of growth. Currently our fifth biggest industry, many think it could be our fastest growing sector over the next decade," the culture secretary is to tell industry leaders.

Many hospitality analysts have expressed the hope that the infrastructure and planning laid in place for the London 2012 Olympic Games and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations will have lasting ramifications for the tourism sector in the UK, although they have warned it is important this growth is not too London-centric.

In a bid to tackle this issue, the government's GREAT campaign - the biggest ever marketing campaign for UK tourism - encompasses various regions of the country in a bid to increase visitor numbers everywhere.

"Analysis shows that our investment in the campaign to date is projected to generate a quarter of a billion pounds for the British economy over the next two years," Ms Miller will declare.

UK tourism agency VisitBritain recently rolled out a plan to create three per cent year-on-year growth in British visitor numbers - something it claims could create more than 200,000 new jobs.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801482908-ADNFCR
