Gram MD offers fridge efficiency tips

There are several factors that effect how energy efficient a refrigeration unit is in a commercial kitchen environment, according to the managing director (MD) of manufacturing firm Gram.

Glenn Roberts told Catering Insight that there is no "silver bullet" when it comes to ascertaining how energy efficient a piece of equipment will be, but suggested there are certain factors that should be taken into account.

The first aspect he highlighted was the choice of refrigerant, something that can have a major impact on the amount of power a unit needs to run at a suitable temperature.

Distributors should consider their global warming potential (GWP) and ozone depletion potential (ODP), according to the Gram MD.

"Hydrocarbon refrigerants show massive improvements on GWP and ODP ... but they are also more efficient conductors of heat and their operating pressures are lower," the expert explained.

Furthermore, a strong insulation system can play a role in how much power is used by a fridge.

"There is considerable development in the design of a new generation of compressors, highly-efficient evaporators and condensers that will greatly improve heat rejection," Mr Roberts claimed.

Thicker wall insulation for a fridge offers more temperature stability and prevents unwanted heat loss when using the unit.

Other additions that can ensure energy efficiency in this kind of appliance are intelligent air circulation systems and smart controllers, which Mr Roberts indicated can help a fridge maintain a stable temperature and thus avoid having to work too hard to deal with peaks and troughs throughout the day.

Fridges and freezers are two of the biggest energy consumers in a modern kitchen, with kitchen professionals advised to keep both items closed as often as possible and ensure the doors are tightly shut to avoid increasing usage.
