Survey reveals admin drain on catering industry

Excessive paperwork is weighing down the catering industry, according to a new report.

Food and beverage software provider Caternet has carried out a survey, which found that admin is a time-consuming drain on the work of many managers in the sector.

The vast majority of respondents (96 per cent) claimed they spend too much time on paperwork at the expense of duties that are more directly linked to their job role. Meanwhile, just four per cent of managers said they devote less than an hour a week to admin tasks, Meat Trade News Daily reports.

One in ten respondents admitted to spending over 20 hours carrying out paperwork every week. Surprisingly, half of these people said they spend up to 60 hours a week on admin duties alone, which is considerably more than the average person's total five-day workload.

The managing director of Caternet, Jerry Brand, claimed this excessive focus on admin will be damaging to businesses in the long-run.

He commented: "The quest to save both time and money seems to be an ongoing battle for most but if we waste this much time on admin how can we expect to maximise our profitability?"

In light of the survey's findings, Mr Brand believes it is no wonder the sector is struggling to "control costs and retain competitive edge", as too much time is spent on tasks that make little contribution to a company's bottom line.

"How can businesses expect to survive long term in a sector where cash is undoubtedly king?" he added.

Mr Brand claimed many companies are relying on outdated processes and called for more firms to switch to modern technology and a 'paperless' environment.

"Successful business operations need to squash this excessive admin bug, and quickly," the Caternet chief concluded.

One way in which firms may be able to reduce their admin workloads is to source catering equipment more effectively. Ordering online from a reputable supplier like Brakes Catering is one way to do this.ADNFCR-16001031-ID-801595558-ADNFCR
